A request from me to all cal poly students(theft)

Cal poly seems to have a high theft rate for motorcycles, my first quarter here last year somewhere around 8 bikes were stolen in 2 weeks. There are rumors about a theft ring that operates in the area of covina/pomona.

If you see ANYTHING suspicious please take note of the people around the motorcycle and any vehicles that they seem to be using.

Some things that are suspicious, a guy messing with the front of the bike where the ignition is.

Grabbing the handle bars and moving them violently or using some type of pry bar on the front.

Loading a bike into a van or truck in a quick manner. If the person owned the bike they would take the time to use a ramp and tie downs to secure the bike. They would NOT just pick up the bike and throw it in. Or push it in and not secure it.

And i have heard that a thief is actually on campus.

If i see anyone stealing a motorcycle I WILL stop them, by any means at my disposal. This is a very personal matter to me even though my bike has not been stolen (yet).

I noticed that since yesterday there's a bike parking inbetween cars in front of the CLA building. If you own a bike you might want to do so too. I doubt someone would ever dare to steal a car/bike right in front of the CLA building...

Besides the motorcycle parking space near the CLA building, where else are there?
Losing a motorcycle would be painful. Isn't there any theft-deterrent tools you can use on your motorcycles?
I'll check out for any suspicious act when passing by a parked motorcycle on campus.

Ive got a 12 gauge shotgun and a sig pro in .357 but I doubt I can use them at school as a theft deterrent. :P

I drove by the motorcycle parking in lot C/D and it seems that they have installed poles to lock the bikes too, now if they could just do that to all the bike parking spots.

Thanks for the support!

Hope you don't bring that gun.
I'll look out when I pass by the bike parking space.

I always wondered how easy it would be to steal a motorcycle, not that I would've attempted it.
Just bring a Ford truck with three strong friends or less, carry the bike and load it and run off.
Bikes should have some type of chain like bicycles, but with stronger material. No?

I always keep my eyes out when I'm in the parking lot, theres an awful lot of thefts lately.

I got a friend that goes to berkely and he had his bike stolen too, it really sucks.

It would be nice to have video cameras installled on major campus exits, or even fake ones to deter vehicle theft.

Another idea I have would be requiring all vehicles to carry two permits, one hangs under the rear view mirror (the one we have), and another one on the dash that the student carries at all times. When the student is not with the vehicle, the dashboard permit is carried by the student. Thus, any vehicles leaving campus with only the rearview mirror permit will raise suspections, because if the vehicle owner is present in the vehicle, it should have two instead of one.

Yea problem with the 2 permit idea is how does it work for motorcycles?

But video cameras would be nice, I doubt it would happen with the budget cuts, seems like the school is more concerned with aesthetics than security.

We should all email Police Chief Guerin and let him know that there's been a lot of thefts on campus. Maybe they still don't know about it.

If a thief wants something real bad, they will get it no matter what.
And the campus police can't check up on parking lot everyday. Heck, I doubt the person in the skywatch towers is on alerty all day.

I had my bicycle jacked back in high school. I had one of those locks where you get it at Sports Challet. But the thieves stole the bike within 10 MINUTES!

If it attracts, it is bound to get stolen, or attempted. Be careful.
