| Newcomer | the only stuff i think is worth takin a look at is in the opinion poll...it's great to match up the incoherent and doltish with their equally inadequate responses... trader...i don't agree at all...the main reason the poly post adheres to its biased folderal is to provide a sense of appeasement to the executives with their faulty pragmaticism... http://macarius.net Last edited by macination; 12-01-03 at 08:39 PM. |

I read the post every tuesday, and have been doing so since my freshman year. I get really really mad about some articles they write. And I think that this year they are not practicing good journalism. I still read, and wish I had more time to write letters to the editor. I'm not sure what happened this year, but something is not working.

![]() | I hope I'm not writing in too late. I just happened to find this forum recently. I work for the Poly Post, but I am no representative. So whatever I say about the Post is only my opinion. OK? I think most of you make hasty assumptions that the Post is funded by the University. It is not. The Post funds itself, barely, through ads. If the Post would recieve any money from an outside entity, it would lose its independence = freedom of speech. I'm sorry to hear that most of you are disappointed at the quality of reporting skills that the writers have. But you must also remember that we are students too. We make mistakes. We are in the process of learning. No one can tell us what to write or how to write news. It all just comes through guidelines we learn in our journalism classes. Now, if you're having problems with those guidelines, then I'd definitely encourage you to write a letter to the communication department professors. This newspaper, like most college newspapers, must contain itself from committing libel or printing stories of bad taste. I know most of us have a hard time with our professors. And I know most of you would like to see articles about how much this school sucks, but the Post cannot do that. However, you may write opinion letters to the opinions editor and i'm sure she will publish them for you. You can write about anything you want to say and I GUARANTEE you that the Post WILL print it. Thanks. |

![]() | Check out 'Unskilled' is Not a Synonym for 'Irresponsible' in January 6/Tuesday Poly Post issue. The staff writer made it Loud and Clear. ![]() Quote:

![]() | I registered because of this conversation. I worked for the poly post last year and I assure you that it is 100% self supporting. In fact, they may not even continue because of funding problems with advertisers. As far as doing what "the bosses" say, every once in awhile, the paper would come into conflict with the university or ASI over some story and the paper always stuck to its guns. As far as writing about bad teachers, the problem is that the paper is open to libel lawsuits. |

Rather than publishing the paper newspaper once in two weeks, why not once in a month? I've seen piles of newspaper left and untouched on the stand. Imagine how much newspaper are recycled per week. Hopefully, by mid-spring and summer, major national companies will start advertising on the Poly Post newspaper. I can't imagine a university without a newspaper circulation.

![]() | Well, you are now right. While staff writers and guest writers never got paid for their work (they got course credit or resume material), staff editors were paid a very modest sum for their trouble, which could amount to about 30 hours a week of work in the office (not counting interviewing, research, etc.) But because of the current money troubles, the staff is entirely unpaid. The trouble with publishing a newspaper just once a month is that advertisers are not interested in getting their message out so infrequently. That's the same trouble with bi-weekly. The Poly Post could probably considerably expand their ad revenues if they were to publish daily, but of course that would require more production money than it was worth. It's a catch 22. |

![]() | Circulation is another way to show advertisers that their message is getting out there. If The Poly Post printed fewer copies (which wouldn't save very much money because paper is cheaper than printing plates and press time), they might not qualify for the national ads that they do get. But I'm not quite sure about that. |

![]() | So it all comes down to the fund provided by both ASI and the board. It will all work out since President Ortiz and the university board is aware of the financial debt the Poly Post is in.

![]() | There will be an updated story coming soon. As far as where the money will come from, when we will get it, and how much, we don't know. All we know is that we're still printing bi-weekly for the rest of this school year. |
