Question about PS2 and Xbox games

Playstation sells "Greatest Hits" versions of their best-selling past games at reduced price. Xbox does the same thing, only they call it "Platinum Hits". Is there a difference between these versions and the original? Why do some people not want to buy Great Hits versions?

According to my friends, some games in the "Game of the Year" edition or "Greatest Hits" often have bonus materials, such as a bonus disc with some additional game contents, or sometimes it might just contain gimmics like a poster.

The levels of "bonus materials" can often vary between the games, so it is better to do some research before buying them (like checking out amazon or other online merchants and see what the customer comments say about them).

This is just a side note. I read that the video game awards for 2004 will be held live on tv on December14th at 9PM EST on Spike Tv. Some of the nominations inculde Mortal Kombat: Deception, Dead or Alive:Ultimate, and WWE: Smackdown! Vs. RAW. It will be hosted by Snoop Dogg.

The reason I ask is because I read about the "Game of the Year" edition of Morrowind for Xbox and liked it better than the original. I went to Costco and happened upon the game, so I bought it. It was encased in some stupid plastic thing so it had blocked off the part that said "Platinum Hits" across the top. I was so annoyed. The box had "RPG of the year" printed on it, so I thought maybe this was the one I wanted. But when I played it, the key new feature I wanted was missing. I was VERY annoyed. I can get this version of the game online for LESS THAN HALF the price I payed! But I can't return it because it's been opened. Grrrgrr

Do they have RPG awards too? I have very little interest in all the fighting games, and absolutely no interest sports games.

I don't know if they have RPG awards. I think the awards will try to cover most if not all of the video games for 2004, but then again I'm not sure. I just thought I post it because it concerns video games. That is all I know about the Video Game Awards for 2004.

I never knew the platinum and the Greatest Hits had extras and different features from the original version. I thought the price was reduced greatly to boost up the sales and the game was indeed a greatest hit.
zoedragon, I heard Fable is a real fun RPG for XBox.

mmm... even better for xboxes is loading a custom dashboard on them so you can install different third party software! I play movies through my home network using the xbox like a networked media center, it's awesome You can also save games to your hard drive so you don't need to swap discs... but who plays games when you can watch recorded TV shows?

I think they may be confusing Platinum or Greatest Hits with "Game of the Year" version. I think KayCee might be right, that popular past games are repackaged and brought back for increased sales. I just wish they wouldn't have put out so many stinking versions. Two is enough, three is confusing.

Yes I am eager to play Fable. I'm still waiting for the price to come down though. I very rarely buy a game within the first 4 months of its introduction, too expensive. Maybe later when I'm rich I won't care, but right now I still think on a college budget.

Rent the videogames. Saves more money and you get to play a wide range of your favorites, found at your local Blockbuster video store.

And for the movie-lovers, Blockbuster also offers Blockbuster Online service, a monthly rental service. Great services and similar to Netflix.

That's a nice service to know about. I have thought about renting games. However I tend to play RPGs, and at the rate that I play (very infrequently) I usually take months to be finished with one. At that rate it's cheaper for me to buy it. I can then sell it after I'm done. Much more cost effective for me.
