Paper or plastic?

Paper has the advantage of being biodegradeable and recyclable, however it uses up trees. Plastic, while also recyclable, is not biodegradeable. Does it make difference what we choose?

When I was a kid I used to prefer to line my trash can with paper bags because it was easier to wipe my snot on it. Gross, but true. Now as an adult I find that plastic bags fit my garbage cans better than paper. (I still wipe my snot on paper, but they're called tissues.) I choose plastic because it's more useful to me.

Environmentally speaking though, is one better than the other? Or is it all about the same?

I am a recycling person myself. All junk mails and old papers, I toss it in my recycling bin. I prefer paper over plastic bags. If people learned to recycle their papers now and then, the cost of trees would not be a problem. So paper over plastic.
And rather than thinking about our environment in the future, why not now. I heard that the environmentists are proposing automakers to reduce the smog exhaust by 30% or so for all the new lineups in 4-5 years. The plan is to reduce existing smogs across the nation and protect our ozone layer.

TMI

I like paper. It makes baging newspapers really easy cause you can just toss in the whole bag without worrying about plastic/twine, etc.
