an upper division class usually means classes that say (for example) PLS 3xx... the 3 means like 3rd year or somethin like that. i.e. MFE 126... thats a lower division class because of the "1" on it.

1: freshman
2: sophomore
3: junior
4: senior

an elective is... THATS THE SAME THING FROM HIGH SCHOOL... in order 2 get 2 calpoly, there were CalSTate requirements... including "electives"

Like JPWRana mentioned, upper level division courses are 3xx and above. Lower division courses are introductory course, usually start with a 1 or a 2.
Electives includes art, kinesiology, music, and etc.

And I think a freshman can't take an upper division course because of its prerequisites and the counselor/advisor wouldn't recommend you.

Major is what you want your career to be. Minor is your second choice of major.
I believe there are certain minors you can attain.
Visit your college advisor office or your current major department and you can pick up the major listings (colored paper) outside the office.

Why do you get a minor in the first place?

Both. Students can take minor if they are interested in pursuing both careers. Can have the minor as backup if their major is not what it seems to be. Get a minor degree if you have extraneous units from seven years at Cal Poly . I wouldn't mind getting a minor degree myself if I had an interest in another major.

If you have the time and money, get a minor while you are at it.
But like Trader mentioned, you need to have an interest or else it would be a waiste of your time and money.
