Humorous holiday stories

Might be nice to share some of the funnier things that happen to us during the holidays, past or present. I'll start with my most recent Thanksgiving...

It was going to be a multi-family gathering at our house, and someone contributed a humongous turkey. It got stuffed and basted and put into the oven. A few hours later I hear periodic sizzling as some part of the turkey is dripping to the floor of the oven. I put in a couple drip pans to catch it. Half an hour later the house slowly starts to fill with white smoke. I open some windows and doors for circulation. At this point I was still in the house by myself, but just as my sweetheart comes home the oven starts to produce some black smoke. We run to the oven and see a little fire inside! THE OVEN IS ON FIRE!! Well not really, luckily it was just the grease in the drip pan. But it still produced a LOT of black smoke that made us choke and our eyes water. We had to take turns running to the bathroom or outside to gulp some clean air. We turn down the heat and let the fire burn itself out, then find that the turkey pan is brimming FULL of juices. Long story short, we were able to save the turkey and the house, and no one had to witness our comical running around.

Any stories of your own to share?

Now that is a classic event, especially on a Thanksgiving day.
I didn't have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at home. We went out and afterwards, we spent the night playing hilarious games.

What sort of games? I've always been ambivalent about games. Some really are fun, but some are just plain corny.

On Christmas of 2003, my sister and her family came over. We had started cooking a turkey in the oven for Christmas Dinner. If you remember, that Christmas had really bad weather. It was raining and the wind was blowing hard all day.

At about 1:30PM, the lights go out. Just poof, and everything shuts off. I waited about 5 minutes hoping they'd come back on, but they didn't. I called Edison, and told them we had no electricity. The operator wanted me to go outside and make sure that we didn't trip a circuit breaker. Well, there was NO WAY I was going outside in the rain, and stand in a puddle, while playing with something electrical! So, I just put the phone down for a couple of minutes, came back and said "they're fine". She said they'd have to call a repairman out.

An hour turned into two, which turned into three. Our turkey was only a quarter done when the lights went out-and our oven is electric! More time passed. I noticed that our WHOLE STREET BLOCK didn't have electricity. I made several calls to Edison, who always said "they have someone on the way". Even more time passed. We decided to eat whatever was available, since now it was around 7:00PM. For Christmas "dinner", we had cold lasagna by candelight! By now everyone was pretty grumpy, since there's nothing really to do without electricity.

My sister finally left at around 9:00 PM. We still had no lights. I made one final call to Edison, and they said they had a bunch of power outages in the area, and to be patient. We decided to go to bed, since there was no point in waiting any longer.

FINALLY, at 1:30 AM on Dec. 26th, we had power back on! Unfortunately, the turkey was ruined, so we had to get a new one.

Wow that is quite a dismal holiday you had! Too bad you didn't have a gas stove/oven. You don't quite realize how much we depend on electricity until it isn't available. No lights, no TV, no computer... that's where cards and board games come in handy, even though I'm not a big fan of them.

Wow, deep fried turkey! I actually have never heard of that, but I guess it isn't too far off from fried chicken. I was just trying to imagine a pot big enough to fit a gigantic turkey. Then I remembered that you cut up chickens before frying them too, heehee.

I think they got a special thing to fry a whole turkey. Looks like a big propane tank that u stick it in...They also sell big drums of oil for you to fry it too...

No, you don't cut up the turkey. It's just a BIG pot that you fill partway with oil (you can buy huge cans of oil from Smart&Final or Costco) and dunk the whole thing in!
Here's a pic
It only takes about 30-40 minutes for the whole thing to cook! But, it has to be thawed first.

And it can be dangerous. Be careful deep-frying turkeys!
