Evolution and Tekken 5

So... Evo happened. There were also trials of Tekken 5 going on. So I thought i'd write up my info/opinions about it. Though I bet most of you have already read things about Tekken 5, then please ignore my writings and move along. ^-^

A trailer on Tekken 5 can be found here: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/05...s_6097587.html

Screenshots and pictures of the new characters can be hound here: http://www.the-magicbox.com/0405/game051204g.shtml

Characters:
Raven: a new character. A character with African American ethnicity (brings balance to the skin color pallate once again [since they took out Eddie]) he looks like... BLADE. i swear he does!!! in the game he looks like a very powerful character. perhaps more powerful then otheres? i'm not too sure - but it might be a possibility. the main outfit he wears is like a deconstructive ninja outfit.... i didn't see too many new powers, but he has these short swords hanging off of a belt of some sort behind him - makes me wonder if its possible if you can use them.
Asuka: a new female character. I like her a lot. She's got a very nice traditional japanese. lots of people were using her and she kicked butt. she's got a similar fighting style to one of the girls from Dead or Alive (i forgot who... I think its Kasumi). I enjoyed watching her kick butt on screen.
Feng: looks interesting.... i didn't see him played very much so i can't really say too much.
Jak upgrades and becomes Jak-5 - a huge mosterous character. nuff said.
There are also quite a few returning characters from Tekken 4 - it seemed as if there isnt such a grand character selection (in comparison to Tekken Tag) but Tekken 5 looks a lot more promising then Tekken 4.

Stages:
The stages in the game are beautiful. Not only that but its quite interactive now. you can throw your opponent into breakable things (like wooden planks) along the side of ring space. Also - there is a lot more detail and general enviromental interaction much like Virtua Fighter 4. There are quite a few stages - but these were the ones i saw played:
- Cave/treasure stage: its a light grey colored cave with gold treasure. think of the cave from Pirates of the Carabian (sp? i know i can't sp) but much brighter. The gold on the ground is interactive and makes metal sounds when characters are fighting/moving on it.
Skyscrapper stage: its beautiful - you're fighting up on the roof top surrounded by the skyscrappers of the city. there's a pink poster that reads "Beefshake" on it... i'm not exactly sure why its there... but it is. i was quite amused.
Heihachi's place burning down: yeah - so the theme of Tekken 5 is "Heihachi Mishima is dead..." and the battle takes place at his place in Japan burning - the wooden planks do break. its awsome. ^-^;
Waterfall stage: one word: beautiful. i think the details in the enviroment is really nice and beautiful.
Courtyard of Roses: its got a olive-grey pallate. with red roses all over the ground. i think it also rains but i don't remember. i think of Devil May Cry when i see it.
The Docks: rocks are breakable - but i don't remember much of this stage at all.
There are a few other statges but I didn't really get to see them at all... maybe they have stages that need to be to be unlocked?

In the trailer it says that they've been using a new graphics engine for the game and honestly I believe them. The grahpics i think have improved quite a lot since Tekken 4. They've made the stage scenery quite beautiful and very impressive. in addition - there is supposed to be a new 'card' system where it allows you to customise your character. very similar to Virtual Fighter 4.

I think by adding a new customization system to a fighting game will bring this game to a new level - since being able to customize your character is definately something unique to each person.

Overall... this is my short review/opinion/whatever on Tekken 5. I was quite impressed with it - much over Tekken 4. so hopefully it will stay this when until the arcade release later in the fall. ^-^ okay... i'll end here. ^-^;;;;;

as for Evolution - there were some high points and low points to it. I have to say Daigo is crazy as hell. yeah... so is Kuni (the Zangief master). All the japanese players blew me away. The results of Evolution 2k4:

I sat and watched through the whole finals. SC2 got kinda boring... Tekken Tag was fun. Ryan Hart deserved it all. It got pretty exciting by that time. I have to say... Street Fighter Turbo and Street Fighter III strike was awsome and most memorable. I think my highlight would have to be Daigo playing Ken and tech parry-ing Chung Li's super kick... aw man it was awsome. okay i'm done rambling. i bet Shoryuken will have dvds or something... or people will have vids up. hell if you're bored go download the 2-hit combo vid. it's pretty awsome. ^-^;

Speaking of Tekken 5 being released in Fall, Doom 3 has been officially released.
I'm anxiously waiting for Halo 2 though, which is being released on November 9, 2004.
