campus radio station

thanks for the tip...am trying again...

will everybody please say yes or no on pursuing the idea of a campus radio station, either online or even low power FM?
ASI gets very few requests that benefit the entire student body. this should be a no brainer.

Pursuing a campus radio station via the internet should be more cost efficient and an easier process than actually getting on the FM (no idea on how to get a FM) radio.
You need to find several DJs that can rotate and play at a scheduled time, find interesting programs (contests, live talk, share campus announcements, and etc.) and music collections to play on the radio. Know ahead of time on what topics the DJ will discuss. Advertise on campus either through the ASI or another campus clubs and organizations (fraternity and sorority).

xiaoxue, are you interested in getting the DJ position or you just to listen to the campus radio station?

And I'll bet half the people on campus are like, "Cal Poly has sports??" I would think that a sports broadcast would be completely different from internet music radio, even though they both originate from the same campus. During my student days I couldn't care less about sports broadcasts, but I might be curious about the music station. Problem is you'd get many more listeners on an FM broadcast than you would an Internet broadcast. Students on campus (excluding the dorms) can't listen to it, even if they go to computer labs, unless they plug in headphones. However like it's been mentioned before, an Internet broadcast would be MUCH more doable than an FM broadcast.

We'd want to find some way to make the programming unique to CPP in some way. Maybe some CPP news could be thrown into the programming every hour.

Do you think the Communications dept would be interested in the project? It's worth finding out if you guys go with the FM option instead of Internet radio.

i think the comm department is pretty beat up for supporting that dog of a newspaper called the poly post. i wonder if it might make sense to make the paper purely online and move some support over to radio. the paper stopped printing last year, and the errors in every edition keep on coming.

Depends on the student interest and if ASI or another campus organization will get involved. As of now, the internet radio seems like a possibility but not enough interest and time for students, I guess.

If no one does it within say 6 months... I'll get around to setting up an internet radio station. I'll put some current news in there about campus, people could e-mail me with whats important and stuff... clubs could information up there... it could be like "campus news every 30 minutes!"... Maybe throw a little NPR bits in there if its legal to do so... <shrug> I got enough on my plate with gradecalpoly.com. Someone needs to come out of the cracks who thinks they can pull it off... yes YOU ... YOU READING THIS RIGHT NOW! What can YOU do to help?

One of my concern is about the quality of the broadcast. I've been to Garage Concerts before, and they are pretty fun. However, the quality of up-and-coming artists are not always suitable for general broadcasting. If the campus radio station becomes an outlet for local talents, then the audience (students) would be forced to go through what the judges in America Idol has to go through - listening to alot of music that could very well be the first work by the artists.

Plus, people have various tastes in music. Hip-hop might be the favorite to one, but "must-avoid" to the other. Rap musics would be controveral... it would be tough to decide which rap song can be aired, since some of them contain lyrics to put down women, attacks on the insitution / law enforcement (when I was in highschool, a visiting police officer was offended when he walked by a group of students, one of which has a radio blaring: Kill the Sheriff.

I would prefer less music, but for the radio as an outlet for school issues, such as where and when there was a traffic condition leading to / out of campus, so students can view it as useful information. Also, since students / faculties would be able to tune in, the radio station would be useful for some communications that wouldn't happen otherwise (I don't think many students take time to go to the Dept Dean's office and vent about the current situations).

agreed...we primarily need news of what's going on. they have all kinds of stuff on campus that people don't know about. the music could support the news. some school stations have canned formats without deejays and that could be another option. thanks for the post!

I think, since music could be had ANYWHERE, i think campus specific news should be the focus. People have such varying points of view about music... but I think news would be good. But e-mail is probably a better way of communicating news. Blah

I've listened to about two college radio stations and both have specific formats at specific times. For example NPR news in the morning, "alternative music" for a specific two-hour block, "new music" at a specific time, electronic music for a two-hour evening block. Keep it consistent and listeners will tune for their favorite part of the programming.

But it's like someone said, music can be had anywhere. Since discovering Shoutcast.com I don't listen to college radio anymore. I can just find my favorite type of music and tune into it there, and there are TONS of broadcasts to choose from.

Campus-related news would make the CPP broadcast stand apart from the other stations. Maybe to help give a broadcast an advantage over email is to offer it as a forum to voice opinions. That would make it unique, however if it isn't made interesting I just don't see that many people bothering to tune in. Maintaining this kind of unique programming where you have people voice opinions would be a lot of work, a lot more than simply playing music. Music you can automate. A forum format requires a lot of human interaction. That may require more time than most students have.

Forums are a great idea, if only we had enough callers. What happens if we have a forum but no callers? It'd be cool to interview people like NPR does over the telephone. So Mr. President of Cal Poly Pomona, "A lot of students are complaining about fewer classes, or more students; or simply not enough classees what is the student:class ratio this year compared to other years?"

It'd be cool... but requires equipment to do that, plus we'd have to put a delay on broadcast to cut someone's line if they decided to say any four letter words.

Yeah, that gets quite complicated. Running that type of format would be a full time job for the person coordinating it. Not to mention all the DJs or hosts involved. It would make for a station very unique to CPP, but a lot less likely to happen due to the manpower and coordination required.

It wouldn't be so bad if we recorded it, and replayed it. And... say every saturday we added new clips, and allowed users to call in. All in all, this is a lot of work none-the-less!

hey, how about this idea...couldn't calpolyonline be a platform for the forum on the radio station? the DJ could bring up the issues we are discussing every day and could read the posts...some people might call in and some post online. it likely would increase the buzz.

Sure can. C'mon someone, I know there are a lot of talented Cal Poly Pomona students out there than can DJ (ASI Session A members). Let's get this started (by 2005)!

I just googled and found this site: http://www.csupomona.edu/~cpparc/

Hello and welcome to the home of the Cal Poly Pomona Amateur Radio Club, or ARC for short. My name is David Chen and although it is not official yet, I will be acting as president until the officers retreat in May.

And Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has a nice radio station (website URL http://www.kcpr.org/) KCPR 91.3 FM.

Too bad the last message was 4/23/2003. I believe it's most likely dead then.
