Here's the inside scoop:

The communication department is thinking about getting its radio station back. Though there is no word on when it will be restored, some of our broadcast majors are dying to get it back on. Cal Poly SLO has one. http://www.w6bhz.org/

wowie....great news! is anybody we know in ASI?
i would think that if our student body were to vote for some support combined with an academic department this thing could really get rolling....

What does ASI have to do with this? You know, ASI doesn't have to control everything that is student-oriented.

Wasn't the previous campus radio station ASI-supported? And I would think that it would be more likely that students would want a campus radio station more than staff, so a student vote would be more likely to go through than a staff/faculty vote.

The amateur radio club isn't dead. they are trying to get up and running again. the poly post has been running announcements in the paper for the last 6 weeks. they are just having difficulty trying to find members who are licensed. i really like the idea of a cpp radio station. and i agree with the fact that it would be difficult to find a music genre that everyone on campus would agree upon. pasadena city college has a great radio station, thanks to npr. as does santa monica college with its kcrw. news might be an idea.. but i don't think you realize the difficulty in finding news on this campus. it is a much harder task trying to control that than any of you might imagine.

hey, let's make this happen! we have more than 20,000 students. what we say goes around here since we are the customers. i would think that if we have a ham radio club, the comm dept, and most of the people on this web site in favor we should make this happen. all we need to do is get organized and go for it. as for the news, couldn't the radio station plug into the news streams already out there? the university has a public relations office, and news on the polycentric, and then every college has a PR office, too. then add the news from the poly post and the sports information director and you have a pretty full plate of stuff. let's go for it!

optomistic thinking jayandbutton, I like it. But it isn't realistic to get the Public Relations department (who creates Polycentric and is the university's PR office) on board. If they got involved in the radio station at all they would have to take control of it. Besides - Public relations isn't news - it is just that ... public relations. very calculated stuff - they don't do anything unless it serves them some purpose. Trust me... the public relations office on campus would love to get their hands on the poly post. we could plug into news services out there (like NPR), but that would require some major cash.

That would be awesome. As a D.J. I'd be happy to help if it got underway.

FM. The AM signal gets weak during certain hours. In fact, the station will put Cal Poly on the map. I do not see a problem getting a lot of support for the station.

General support isn't the problem. Most students will say "Yeah!" to a radio station on their campus. But will they be willing to volunteer time and money for it? Less likely.

Zoe you are right on. This idea is FABULOUS! I have wanted a radio station since I came here years ago. however, finding students dedicated and taltented enough to carry this on is tough.
As for ASI, they are a great source for funding, but until then the diehards here should get together and make a proposal. find out what you need to make an internet vs. FM station. What are the costs? Manpower requirements. do a music vs. talk radio poll among your classmates and friends.

Once you have this info, then go to Comm dept (and hope they dump the post) maybe the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. If you go with all this research, they are MUCH more likely to take you seriously and consider this happening. people on this campus like to see numbers... what wil this cost... where will it be housed... etc.

Hope this helps. This is great, I would love to see this happen! Prove to all those people out there who say it cant!

we need unity!

the real key is to get students unified. hey, WE are the customers! when students get organized and unified things get done. sounds like we have a dozen or more people willing to work. anybody in the forum who is a comm major? that might give us an edge. anybody in the forum who is in ASI as an officer? that also will help.

If the radio does go through, where does the DJ get all their musics from?

I'll be willing to be a dj. There should be diversity to everyone, so I will have a talk show in spanish for those who speak spanish, like Piolin por la mañana, for free. Why all of you guys get together at some fixed day to promote this cause or something. I'll be your leader if you want to (yeah right)

Sometimes... music labels PAY radio stations for playing their songs because they stimulate people buying the album. It varies wildly I think, also there are great conspiracies about music artists paying to be #1 for a week... which is illegal. but... still happens
