Auditing and sitting in on classes.

Hello again guys! I was wondering if anyone here knew what the procedure and expectations are if someone wants to audit a course at CPP. I want to sit in on a Philosophy 201 class and a graduate-level psych course just to check them out. I want to have to go through as little paper work and risk as possible. I've already taken an intro psych course at my community college, but I'd like to see the different between a Poly psych course and the course I took. I'm willing to sign up for the courses on some sort of audit basis if that's necessary, but I don't meet the prereqs for the psych course since I'm an undergrad and it's a grad course. Anyone know if there's a way around those requirements in you're auditing? And what are the audit expectations? What's the paperwork like and how readily do teachers accept auiding students? Is it possible to have a bad mark on your transcript if you decide to stop going to a course you're auditing or if you don't do very well? I have a feeling that I wouldn't be able to understand most of the psych course, so I don't want to sign up for it just for fun and end up having it hurt my transcripts.
I'm hoping if I just talk to the professor on the first day of classes I'll be able to convince them to let me just hang out in the class and listen to lectures. Anyone try anything like that before? It seems like it'd be much less of a pain and I'd really prefer this method, but I have a feeling that university red tape will make this hard to do. I hate red tape. Anyways, I know that's a ton of questions, but if anyone could give my any help with any of those questions I'd be very grateful. Thanks much, all. Happy summer!

Cal Poly's psychology courses are pretty good. I find most of them pretty interesting, but I guess it also depends on who you decide to take the class with. There are some excellent professors in the department. They include, but are not limited to the following: Alvarado, Barker-Hackett, Englert, Horner, Johnson, Mio, Siaw, and Wachs just to name a few.

I'm trying to do the same thing as well. I also want to audit a graduate psychology course (PSY 510 Research Methods and Statistics). From what I understand, an undergraduate may petition up to 13 quarter units of graduate or undergraduate credit for courses taken as an undergraduate student providing that:

1 None of the courses to be taken for graduate creit is required for the B.A. degree
2. The student has senior standing (135 quarter units or more) and has an upper diviision GPA of 2.75 or better.
3. The petition has to be turned in by the 3rd week of the quarter.
4. You must pick up a form from the Graduate Studies Office located in Building one.

I think a separate GPA will be calculated only for that course but I'm not too sure. It is best that you e-mail Dr. Jeff Mio, the graduate coordinator for the Psychology department for more information. Thanks for all the great info on sitting in on psych. I'm gonna have to ask at the office what the policy is if a student has senior standing in terms of units but hasn't actually taken any upper division courses. I have a lot of units from being in college for so long, but I'm not sure if that gives me senior standing. And if it does, I'm not sure that's enough without any upper division credit. Well, I'll ask at the office and find out.
Does anyone happen to have any info on sitting in on/auditing normal courses? I also want to audit a intro to philosophy class and I was wondering what that would be like. Would it be possible to just sort of go in and speak to the professor, hoping they'll let me just sit in, or is there paperwork I'll have to fill out? Thanks again for all the help guys.

Yhea, I've tried to sit in on a few classes now. I just walk in on the first day and after the class is over I ask the prof if I can just sit in for the quarter. So far they've all been fine with it. I tried this for a Bio class called Horizons in Biotechnology, two math classes (the multivariable calc classes, 214 and 215), and an intro to philosophy class. I never actually sat in for more than the first three or four lectures because I'd just get too busy with the classes I was enrolled in, but it was never a real problem getting permission to sit in.
