Off-roading: What's the point?

Some places you need to have an off-road vehicle to get around during adverse weather conditions. But for most city-dwellers there is absolutely no need. So aside from cases where you actually have a destination that is off the beaten track, what is the point of off-roading? I don't particularly enjoy driving over speed bumps or pot holes, nor do I know anyone who does. So why would someone go out of their way to go tear up and pollute some natural habitat and waste fuel while they're at it? I just don't get it.
