| I've listened to about two college radio stations and both have specific formats at specific times. For example NPR news in the morning, "alternative music" for a specific two-hour block, "new music" at a specific time, electronic music for a two-hour evening block. Keep it consistent and listeners will tune for their favorite part of the programming.
But it's like someone said, music can be had anywhere. Since discovering Shoutcast.com I don't listen to college radio anymore. I can just find my favorite type of music and tune into it there, and there are TONS of broadcasts to choose from.
Campus-related news would make the CPP broadcast stand apart from the other stations. Maybe to help give a broadcast an advantage over email is to offer it as a forum to voice opinions. That would make it unique, however if it isn't made interesting I just don't see that many people bothering to tune in. Maintaining this kind of unique programming where you have people voice opinions would be a lot of work, a lot more than simply playing music. Music you can automate. A forum format requires a lot of human interaction. That may require more time than most students have. |
