| One of my concern is about the quality of the broadcast. I've been to Garage Concerts before, and they are pretty fun. However, the quality of up-and-coming artists are not always suitable for general broadcasting. If the campus radio station becomes an outlet for local talents, then the audience (students) would be forced to go through what the judges in America Idol has to go through - listening to alot of music that could very well be the first work by the artists.
Plus, people have various tastes in music. Hip-hop might be the favorite to one, but "must-avoid" to the other. Rap musics would be controveral... it would be tough to decide which rap song can be aired, since some of them contain lyrics to put down women, attacks on the insitution / law enforcement (when I was in highschool, a visiting police officer was offended when he walked by a group of students, one of which has a radio blaring: Kill the Sheriff.
I would prefer less music, but for the radio as an outlet for school issues, such as where and when there was a traffic condition leading to / out of campus, so students can view it as useful information. Also, since students / faculties would be able to tune in, the radio station would be useful for some communications that wouldn't happen otherwise (I don't think many students take time to go to the Dept Dean's office and vent about the current situations). |
