Paper or plastic?

Paper has the advantage of being biodegradeable and recyclable, however it uses up trees. Plastic, while also recyclable, is not biodegradeable. Does it make difference what we choose?

When I was a kid I used to prefer to line my trash can with paper bags because it was easier to wipe my snot on it. Gross, but true. Now as an adult I find that plastic bags fit my garbage cans better than paper. (I still wipe my snot on paper, but they're called tissues.) I choose plastic because it's more useful to me.

Environmentally speaking though, is one better than the other? Or is it all about the same?
