My theory relies on the validity of evolution. Evolution can be tested in a petri dish. The first step would involve growing a culture of bacteria. One would need to introduce an antibiotic to the culture. This will cause most of the bacteria to die. But a few will have the mutations necessary to survive. They will grow and become dominant.
The first chicken would have evolved in a similar way, but over a longer period of time. A bird similar, but not the same as a chicken existed long ago. As the habitat changed, the bird would have had to adapt through natural selection. Characteristics advantageous to survival would have incrementally become dominant until the bird we now know as a chicken formed.
