It would really be difficult to manage such a project because students are busy as it is with their studies and stuff. However, it would really be a great experience for people involved in it.

Yeah, it's becoming more and more popular for web programming among new web developers. It's easy to catch up since php is based on C, and the ability to add MySQL functionality makes it so powerful. Not to mention, it is free!
I know a lot about php, but I wouldn't say I am an advanced coder. Somewhere between intermediate and advanced I guess. Though I've been using php for a couple of years now... as far as experience goes.
