| And the nominations go to...
The fantasy-adventure The Lord of the Rings; The Return of the King continues its awards-season roll. With 11 Oscar nominations - including Best Picture and Best Director - it is the movie to beat, said Daryl Strickland in the Los Angeles Times. Master and Commander received 10 nominations, including Best Picture. The biggest snub was the Cold Mountain and lead actress Nicole Kidman, said David Germain in the Associated Press. While leading man Jude Law and supporting actress Renee Zellweger were nominated, the film lost out on actress, picture, and director nods. A surprise Best Actress nomination came for 13-year old Keisha Castle-Hughes, who starred in Whale Rider. Sofia Coppola might make history if she wins for Best Director, said Stephanie Rosenbloom in the New York Times. A woman has never gone home with the directing statuette.
