Making the forums amiable is a high concern. But I don't think visitors are
more likely to join the forums because of the avator feature. What attracts visitor to register and join networking is the content and the activities that takes place on the forum itself.
I agree that having avators might help create an identity on the username but not for everyone. I have created identity and can easily distinguish several members by reading their posts alone.
I will enable avators.
