A 21-year-old man suffered serious injuries after falling from the fifth
floor
classroom/laboratory side of the CLA Building onto the second floor
concrete
Paseo area at approximately 10:40 a.m. this morning, Thursday, Nov. 13.
The
extent of the victims injuries is unknown at this time.
The incident is currently being investigated by the University Police
Department.
This is certainly a shock to the campus community. First and foremost,
our
thoughts and prayers are with this young man and his family, said
President
J. Michael Ortiz. Our highest priority is to ensure the safety and
welfare of
the campus.
University Police Officers arrived on the scene in less than a minute to
find
the man lying on the pavement. He was reportedly conscious and able to
respond to officers.
University dispatchers notified the Los Angeles County Fire Department
and
called for an ambulance. The victim was airlifted from the campus soccer
field
at approximately 11 a.m. and taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
According to university records, the man graduated from Cal Poly Pomona
in June
2003 in computer information systems and is not currently enrolled at
the
university.
Due to the serious nature of the incident, the university is providing
counselors through Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) to support
students and staff who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident.
