Why is it that Matrix Revolution received many average/negative feedbacks from the critics?

Why is it so difficult to praise or give a positive feedback for a movie.

I was satisfied with the finale of the trilogy because the movie made its point. The war between the machines and the human is over (as it was foretold), Almighty Agent Smith has fallen and Xion is saved.
Did the viewers and the critics expect some kind of a twist in the end or more CGI action?
