i know i am not a big malone fan but if he is as the radio announcer says "the heart and soul of the team" then this explains why this is the worst team we've had in at least five years and one that refuses to win the close ones. where is the heart, hervey? san diego is a non scholarship program, meaning these guys are walk ons. and why is hervey playing 37 minutes when once again he has proven we are almost always less effective with him playing? check out the box score. he only scored four points with zero rebounds and shot 33 per cent of his free throws while the entire team shot 78 per cent. this is the team leader? while hervey played 37 minutes with four points larry gordon played only 9 minutes and scored seven! send the heart and soul to a cardiologist for a tuneup.
xiaoxue, you are making a lot of valid points. but i doubt nobody is as down on hervey as he is on himself. he was all conference last year, but apparently he was more comfortable in a supporting role with jeff and david leading the team. now he's uncomfortable as the team leader and his declining stats prove it. he never has been an accurate shooter, but his defensive energy justified his starting job and paul helms' "heart and soul" label. but sadly this year the team is just not making the vital defensive stops it made last year, and you must look to your top defender to step up when the chips are down.
i agree that boyd is getting the short end of the stick, particularly since he is clearly the most productive player on the team. perhaps benching hervey will work to re-energize malone and this team. if boyd is really that spooked by starting i'd try larry gordon at number two with hoffman at point and then boyd coming in at the first break.
coach k. has to shake the tree hard immediately as we are en route to a .500 season--or gasp, even worse--and the tag of being a so-so team. the men must play huge at dominquez hills wednesday night or kiss the playoffs goodbye.
