Understanding “isms”

Why you should go and What you can learn!
This workshop will help individuals examine the issues of racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, and among other oppressive practices by providing some working definitions and concepts. It will also examine how leadership plays an important role in educating others about “isms”.
Workshop Goals
Understand basic concepts of power and privilege
Cycle of oppression
Understand general terminology and definitions of “isms”, such as racism, classism, sexism, ablism, etc.
Other words including homophobia, xenophobia, etc
Understand how leadership plays an important role in educating others about “isms”.
Leadership to End Violence
When: Wednesday 04/20/05 Time: 6:00-7:00 p.m. Where: BSC, Andromeda C
Why you should go and What you can learn!
This workshop will bring awareness to issue violence. Explore how violence impacts our individual lives and our various communities. This workshop will help understand how violence takes different forms and shapes. Violence is everyone business, learn how you can advocate and prevent violence.
Workshop Goals
Define the word “violence”
Cycles of oppression, ex. relationships, media, family, etc)
Understand how violence is prevalent and rising issue in America culture
Understand how violence effects many communities
Explore ways to prevent violence. Understand how leadership
