I don't quite understand this statement. It would be foolish for society to be using cryonics because a giant meteor might wipe us out anyway? Like don't bother, we're all dead in a few years anyway? That's quite a grim view on life.

The statement about grandparents being cynical.... most grandparents already ARE cynical and they, for the most part, do not fear death. Those who are interested in cryonics want more out of life, they aren't ready to leave yet. They aren't the cynical ones.

I think perhaps you are equating cryonics with immortality? It won't stop you from dying of old age.
